Metro Board Backs Transit Expansion In Anacostia Print E-mail
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Board of Directors approved a resolution February 19, 2004, that will result in the construction of an above ground, light-rail transportation system along the Anacostia River's eastern shore between Pennsylavania Avenue, SE and Bolling Air Force Base. Construction is scheduled to begin in the Spring of this year on the project which will connect neighborhoods, increase Metro ridership and support economic development.

WMATA Board Member and D.C. Councilmember David Catania pushed for the Board's endorsement and hailed the project as "an incredible opportunity to spur economic development in Wards 7 and 8. Not only will transit options increase for residents of Anacostia, but this system will serve as a valuable link between communities as well as employment, retail, and cultural centers."

The 2.7 mile corridor was identified after extensive study by the D.C. Department of Transportation and WMATA. The approved route was selected in part because a railroad right-of-way already exists. The light rail-system will shuttle individuals along the CSX Shepard Industrial Spur right-of-way between Pennsylvania Ave., SE and Bolling Air Force Base near the John Phillip Sousa Memorial Bridge. Proposed stops include Pennsylvania Ave., SE, Fairlawn, Old Anacosita, Anacostia Metrorail Station, Barry Farms and DIA/Bolling AFB. After initiating this service in 2006, the Demonstration Project would have a three-year evaluation period after which a decision would be made whether to continue service.
