WASHINGTON DC...The Department of Health's Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program will present Councilmember David A. Catania (At-Large) with an Advocacy Award on Tuesday, October 22. The award will be given at the 5th Annual Provider Appreciation Dinner held at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, 1250 New York Ave., NW.
Catania helped to secure funding for Project Wish, which has allowed the program to provide screening and early detection for breast, cervical and ovarian cancers to uninsured and underinsured women in the District. Catania also worked to create the Women's Health Program Initiative in the District to promote and coordinate positive health policies, practices, and services for women in the District. This initiative, which was kicked-off in February 2000, represented almost two years of effort to establish an advocate's office within the District's Department of Health for women's health issues. Among other things, the Women's Health Program Initiative (WHPI) focuses on cervical, breast and ovarian cancer prevention, screening and treatment. In addition, the WHPI addresses issues relating to diet, substance abuse and sexually transmitted diseases. ”The importance of women's health is critically important to the well-being and vitality of the District and its people, families, and neighborhoods,” said Councilmember Catania. ”The Women's Health Program Initiative has helped to provide the necessary focus for the women of Washington to have knowledge of and access to opportunities for optimal health.” For more information on the Women's Health Program Initiative, contact the Department of Health at 202.442.9376. |
