Dangerous Roadways Getting Attention Print E-mail
WASHINGTON DC...Residents near David Elementary school in Ward 7 in the District have complained repeatedly about reckless driving and dangerous speeding near 46th Street and Hilltop Terrace. Monday, May 20 at 10 a.m., several concerned citizens, Councilmember David A. Catania (At-Large), and the Metropolitan Police Department met to perform a traffic study and discuss possible solutions.

"We have seen cars drive up on the sidewalk, nearly running down students on their way home from the elementary school. Excessive speeding is also a problem throughout the neighborhood," said Ms. Jackie Carter, a resident of the Benning Heights neighborhood.

On Monday, Sergeant Steven Brown of the Metropolitan Police Department; Councilmember Catania; Johnnie Rice, Director of Constituent Services for Councilmember Catania; Maurice Nelson, Affiliated Computer Services' Project Manager for the District; and several residents of the Benning Heights community gathered at 717 46th Street and Hilltop Terrace, SE to address traffic problems and possible solutions to allow for safe pedestrian crossing. Affiliated Computer Services is contracted by the Metropolitan Police Department to handle speeding and red light cameras in the District. The traffic study is the second coordinated by the Office of Councilmember Catania. The first was in the Lamond-Riggs neighborhood of the District where the combination of a school and library on a street notorious for speeding created a dangerous environment.

"Citizens in these neighborhoods should be able to walk to school, the store, and the library without fear of being run down," said Councilmember Catania.
