Council Committees To Review Status Of District's Welfare To Work Initiatives |

WASHINGTON, DC...The Council of the District of Columbia's Committee on Public Services, Chaired by Councilmember David A. Catania (R-At Large), and the Committee on Human Services, Chaired by Councilmember Sandy Allen (D-Ward 8), will conduct a joint hearing on Monday, November 26, 2001 to receive an update on the District of Columbia's Welfare to Work Initiatives undertaken by the Departments of Human Services and Employment Services and their contractors. This hearing is a follow-up to two earlier hearings conducted by the Council in January and June of 2001.
Under federal law, most District residents who are currently receiving assistance under the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program will stop receiving benefits in 2002. In the meantime, they are to receive job training and placement under Welfare to Work Initiatives. The hearing will review the status of these initiatives in the District, Witnesses at the hearing will include Carolyn Colvin, Director of the Department of Human Services; Gregory Irish, Director of the Department of Employment Services; and representatives of the ten District contractors which assist TANF recipients with job training and placement. The Hearing will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 26, 2001 in the Council Chambers located at One Judiciary Square, 441 Fourth Street, NW, Washington DC. |
