RECENT IMPROVEMENTS IN STAFFING AND EQUIPMENT CITED Councilmember David Catania (At-Large), Chairman of the Committee on Health, is “cautiously optimistic” about recent improvements at Greater Southeast Community Hospital. At a Committee hearing on July 11, 2007, hospital officials and the Department of Health outlined a host of actions taken to correct deficiencies identified by regulators last month.
“We are beginning to see tangible improvements in the quality of care delivered at the hospital,” said Catania. “This is largely due to the Committee’s vigilance and focus over the past few months.
Catania praised the Health Department for its aggressiveness in carrying out hospital inspections. He said that the combined efforts of the Mayor and Council have captured the attention of Greater Southeast officials and sent the message that the District is serious about improving the quality of healthcare provided there. The ownership of the hospital has committed to providing $500,000 per week specifically to address dilapidated equipment, lack of staff and supplies, and to pay vendors.
“My goal now is to make sure that there is no slippage or backsliding on behalf of Greater Southeast’s ownership,” added Catania. “I will stay completely focused on making sure that the financial and operational promises are met.”
