KNOCK OUT KIDNEY DISEASE; FREE HEALTH SCREENINGS IN THE WILSON BUILDING On Wednesday, August 29, the Committee on Health partnered with the National Kidney Foundation for a free health screening in the atrium of the Wilson Building. The event was open to members of the public as well as District employees. An on-site physician counseled each participant individually regarding their results, family history and other factors that may put them at risk for diabetes and heart disease. The Kidney Foundation provided comprehensive exams and the results will be sent to the participant's home or to their physician for further analysis and care.
Councilmember Catania and staff participated in the glucose, cholesterol and kidney screenings. Sharona Morgan, Director of Constituent Services, participated in and helped staff the screening: "It was an effective event with an overwhelming response. The screening was scheduled to end at 2 p.m., but the volunteers stayed until they ran out of supplies hours later."
Health fairs play a vital role in helping the community access healthcare. Individuals can prevent and detect health issues and receive follow up care from the services and information they receive at health fairs. Many of these events provide free services such as immunizations, glucose and cholesterol screening, and HIV testing.
