Groundbreaking Study Shows Prescription Drug Samples Rarely Benefit Poor and Uninsured
Washington, D.C. – Councilmember David Catania (At-Large), Chairman of the Committee on Health, released the following statement on the results of the first-ever national study of prescription drug samples by the Cambridge Health Alliance and Harvard Medical School:
“This study further helps separate fact from fiction when it comes to the claims of the pharmaceutical industry. We have been told that prescription drug samples are a form of charity. Moreover, those of us who question the marketing practices of the pharmaceutical industry are constantly reminded that we should be thankful for such generosity. Now, for the first time we know the objective truth – that the inundation of free samples is not a gift. The use of free samples is a marketing tool employed to make your doctor prescribe you the newest and most expensive medications on the market.”
