Councilmember to Teach In School of Public Health and Health Services
Washington, D.C. – Today, Councilmember David Catania (At-Large) announced that he was recently appointed as a Professorial Lecturer at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS). SPHHS is the only public health school in the District of Columbia, and one of only 39 accredited schools in the nation. GWU officials said that Catania’s deep knowledge of urban health issues, his hands-on experience, and his successful legislative record were key elements of his appointment.
“I am very excited about the opportunity to teach at the GW School of Public Health; I look forward to sharing our experiences in the District of Columbia with the students,” said Catania. “The number and complexity of the health care challenges that we confront in the District are fascinating subjects for advanced study in health policy.”
As a professorial lecturer, Catania will host periodic lecturers on issues of importance in health, law and policy for law students, graduate students and PhD candidates in the Public Health and Policy program. He will join a prestigious group of faculty from diverse backgrounds in public health and policy.
The unanimous decision was made by the University’s Committee on Appointments, Promotions and Tenure. In order to avoid any conflict of interest, Catania will forgo any remuneration that accompanies the position.
“We are very fortunate to have a nationally recognized school of public health in our city. It is something that our government should take better advantage of,” added Catania. “When I became the Chair of the Health Committee, there was virtually no collaboration between the two. I’ve worked hard to cement ties between the school and our Department of Health, and I hope this appointment will further that goal.”
