Catania Optimistic about District’s Prospects for Congressional Representation
Washington, D.C. – Today, Councilmember David Catania (At-Large), released the following statement on the Senate cloture vote on S. 160, the D.C. Voting Rights Act of 2009.
“Today’s vote in the United States Senate represents a major step forward for basic democratic rights for all Americans. While there is still more work to be done on this issue, by withstanding a cloture vote in the Senate we have cleared a major hurdle on the path to gain full representation for District residents. There are countless numbers of people who have helped us get to this point. I’d like to particularly thank Mayor Fenty, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, Senators Joseph Lieberman and Orin Hatch, and Ilir Zherka and the staff at D.C. Vote for their tireless efforts. I am very optimistic that our residents will soon have a vote in the United States Congress.”
Councilmember Catania along with his colleagues attended today’s vote. The Senate voted 62-34 to move the bill forward for full consideration. For passage, the measure requires a majority vote in the Senate.
