Catania Gives Lavender Graduation Address at Georgetown University Print E-mail
Lavender Graduation Marks First in University’s History

Washington, D.C., - Today, Councilmember David Catania (At-Large) addressed students, faculty and administration of Georgetown University at the first-ever Georgetown University Lavender Graduation Ceremony. The ceremony honors graduating gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (GLTB) students and recognizes their achievements and contributions to the university. Catania, who recently gave the Michael Jurist Distinguished Alumni address at the Georgetown School of Foreign Service, earned his bachelor’s degree from Georgetown in 1990 and his law degree in 1993.

“This is a great day for GLBT students and for Georgetown. The University has made great progress at supporting its GLBT students and acknowledging their accomplishments. I am very proud of my alma mater and honored to be part of the ceremony,” said Catania.

Catania spoke about his time at Georgetown and encouraged the graduating students to reflect on the significance of the event. Georgetown is the nation’s oldest Catholic and Jesuit institution. It was founded in 1789, the same year the U.S. Constitution took effect. Finally, he explained that Georgetown’s progress in accepting gays and lesbians and its promotion of diversity among its students is a national example for all universities.
