Catania Releases Statement On Council Vote to Recognize Same-Sex Marriages Performed in Other States Print E-mail

Washington, D.C. – Today, the D.C. Council voted 12-1 to approve a measure to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. Only Councilmember Marion Barry (Ward 8), who previously sponsored the amendment, voted against the measure. It marks the second time the Council has approved the measure, which will now be presented to the Mayor for his signature. Councilmember David Catania (At-Large) issued the following statement:

“Today’s vote is an important victory not only for the gay and lesbian community but for everyone who supports equal rights. Gays and lesbians bear every burden of citizenship and are entitled to every benefit and protection that the law allows to everyone else. I am proud that the District of Columbia will be among the first jurisdictions to confer equal marriage rights to all its residents. Whenever 12 out of 13 Councilmembers vote to support any issue, it indicates that there is strong support for the issue among our constituents.”
