Pediatric Hospital Receives Donation of $150 Million from United Arab Emirates
Washington, D.C. – Today, Councilmember David Catania (At-Large) congratulated Children’s National Medical Center on receiving a $150 million donation from the Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The gift was arranged by Washington philanthropist Joseph Robert, Jr. The gift will be given in five yearly installments and will be used to fund research ($60 million), research facilities ($40), a surgical institute endowment ($25), and other medical needs ($25 million).
“Today is a very exciting day for the health care in the District of Columbia,” said Catania. “Children’s is a world-class institution, and I look forward to learning about the important medical progress that will come as a result of these resources. On behalf of the District residents I represent, I want to extend my sincerest thanks to Joseph Robert, Jr. and the Government of the United Arab Emirates for this generous donation.”
Recently, the District, CNMC, and United Medical Center (UMC) broke ground on an $11 million pediatric emergency room at UMC in Ward 8. Once completed, the hospital will offer state-of-the-art emergency services to District children who live east of the Anacostia River. CNMC also partners with the District on other critical healthcare measures, including the District’s school nurse program, which provides full-time nursing coverage for District public schools, and the nationally recognized pre-school immunization program. Since its inception, the pre-school immunization program – the Dr. Bear Mobile Express – has screened over 1,500 children at child development centers, head start programs, elementary schools and community health fairs.
