Independent Catania Named Huffington Post’s “Most Impressive Democrat of the Week” Print E-mail
Councilmember Lauded for Moving Forward on Marriage Equality

Washington, D.C. – Councilmember David Catania (At-Large), a registered Independent, was named the “Most Impressive Democrat of the Week” by the Huffington Post on Friday. Catania joined Representative Alan Grayson (D-FL) as last week’s co-winners. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) was named Honorable Mention. The award is part of a weekly column by journalist Chris Weigant. In his article, Weigant lauds Catania for refusing to play the “wait and see” game on equal marriage rights for gays and lesbians.

“Equal marriage rights for gays and lesbians is a matter of basic fairness,” said Catania. “I am pleased that the District continues to be a leader on respecting the human and civil rights of our citizens.”

Though not a registered Democrat, Catania has amassed an unequaled legislative record on important progressive issues. During his tenure as Chairman of the Committee on Health, the number of uninsured District residents has been cut in half (from 14 percent to 7 percent). Catania led the District’s efforts to improve benefits for Medicaid beneficiaries, revolutionized the District’s school-health program, and was the driving force behind the resurrection of United Medical Center in Ward 8. Furthermore, Catania is a national leader on improving the safety, while reducing the costs of prescription drugs.
