Project Engaged District Youth In Order to Refine Sexual Health Programs in The District
Washington, D.C. – Today, Councilmember David Catania (At-large) chaired a Committee on Health hearing on the Youth Sexual Health Project (YSHP). The YSHP involved an investigation into the sexual health awareness and perceptions among District youth. Beginning in the spring of 2009, the YSHP was a collaboration between Health Committee staff and the George Washington University Graduate School of Public Health. The project also utilized the invaluable contributions of two District high school students participating in the Council’s Youth Internship Program.
The YSHP was conducted based on the philosophy that examining the sexual health awareness and perceptions of District students can assist policymakers to more appropriately target public health messages, resources, and programming. It utilized surveys and peer interviews to examine the knowledge, preferences, and perceptions of young people on issues such as the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
“The YSHP is a sophisticated sexual health framework that can be fully implemented in the District,” said Catania. “The beauty of this project is that it was youth-inspired. District students were heavily engaged from the beginning. The study’s authors devoted countless hours to conducting field research and produced a great body of work from which an important sexual health framework was derived.”
The key findings and major lessons learned from the research were culminated into a report titled A Framework for Change. The full YSHP report can be found by clicking here.
