Councilmember Also Lauds Chairman Gray for Handling the Matter Openly and Thoroughly
Washington, D.C. – Today, Councilmember David Catania (At-Large) commended Attorneys Robert S. Bennett (Hogan & Hartson, LLP) and Amy Sabrin (Skadden Arps, LLP) and their team on the release of their investigation of Council earmarks. The investigation began last summer amid allegations of irregularities in several Council earmarks and personal services contracts. Councilmember Catania released the following statement upon the release of the report:
“I want to thank Mr. Bennett, Ms. Sabrin, and their team for conducting a thorough and balanced investigation into irregularities concerning several Council earmarks. Mr. Bennett’s reputation and experience conducting these types of investigations is unparalleled. The Council was lucky to have such a distinguished team donate their services and time on a pro-bono basis. The residents of the District of Columbia are grateful for their service.
I’d also like to thank Chairman Gray for the open manner in which he handled this situation. He did not shrink from our responsibility as elected leaders to investigate allegations of impropriety thoroughly and transparently. He empowered Mr. Bennett to conduct his investigation independently, wherever the facts may lead. He is to be commended for that.”
Councilmembers were briefed on the findings of the investigation in a televised session prior to today’s Committee of the Whole meeting.
