Councilmember Partners with Hello Cupcake to Greet Soon-to-Be Newlyweds
Washington, D.C. – Tomorrow, Councilmember David Catania (At-Large) will partner with Hello Cupcake (1351 Connecticut Avenue, NW) to greet couples registering to marry in the District of Columbia, the first day same-sex couples can apply for a marriage license. Beginning at 8:30 a.m., the first 200 couples will receive a box including Hello Cupcake’s signature chocolate and vanilla flavors, offering congratulations and best wishes. Catania will personally greet couples and hand out cupcakes between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
In December, the Council approved the “Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Amendment Act of 2009,” authored by Catania, to permit same-sex couples to marry in the District. The law also reaffirms religious protections enjoyed by churches and religious organizations that are guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Specially, the bill states that no church or clergy member shall be required to perform or solemnize a marriage that is in violation of their religious beliefs. It also allows churches and religious organizations to refuse to offer their facilities, goods, or services for the solemnization or promotion of a marriage that is not recognized by their religious doctrine.
