Catania Speaks to LGBT Employee Group (GLOBE)
Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, D.C. Councilmember David Catania (At-Large) gave the keynote address at the Library of Congress Gay Lesbian or Bisexual Employee Group (GLOBE) at their annual Pride Month event. The address was delivered at noon in the in the Whittall Pavilion the Library’s Thomas Jefferson Building. Catania discussed the Council’s success in granting equal access to marriage for all District citizens, regardless of sexual orientation, and continuing efforts to extend equal rights and protections under law to the LGBT community.

“I was honored to be chosen to speak to the Library of Congress’s LGBT employees,” said Catania. “Last year was a banner year for the rights of the LGBT community here in the District and across the country. It is important that we take a moment and reflect on how much we have achieved in a very short amount of time.”

GLOBE is an educational, recreational and cultural organization for gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender employees in the Library of Congress.  It works to raise awareness about issues concerning GLBT employees in an effort to eliminate prejudice in the workplace. GLOBE promotes cognizance in areas that are of interest to GLBT employees while supporting positive working relationships among employees of all sexual orientations.

Other events planned by The Library of Congress for Pride month include a panel discussion on research uncovering LGBT materials in the Library’s collections to be held at 1 p.m. on June 23, in the Mary Pickford Theater. At 12:00 p.m. on June 29, in the Whittall Pavilion, Capt. Joan Darrah, U.S. Navy (ret.), will deliver a lecture titled "Don’t Ask Don’t Tell: Is it Here Forever?" These events, which are sponsored jointly by the Library’s Office of Opportunity, Inclusiveness and Compliance and LC GLOBE, are free and open to the public.
