During the D.C. Council's March 1, 2005, Legislative Meeting Councilmember David Catania (At-Large) spoke in favor of allocating cash reserves to finance drug treatment and HIV/AIDS programs as well as litigation efforts in the Office of the Attorney General. The approval of these provisions ensures the continuation of important programs and the defense of prescription drug legislation.
"I'm delighted the Council saw fit to fund these initiatives without pinching other vital projects," Catania said. "The HIV/AIDS and Addiction Prevention and Recovery Administrations ably showed need for money from our reserve fund and it was essential that the Attorney General's office have enough resources to carry out its mission." Provisions in the "2005 Operating Cash Reserve Allocation Act" specifically advanced by Councilmembers Catania include: $750,000 for the Department of Heath to provide substance abuse and treatment services under the Choice in Drug Treatment program; $2.1 million to provide necessary matching funds for the Ticket to Work, HIV/AIDS program; and $400,000 for the operation of sexually transmitted disease and tuberculosis clinics. |
